Summer 1941. It is over a year since Hitler's troops occupied Denmark, and a life with rationing marks, scarcity of goods and German soldiers in the street scene has long since become commonplace. So when the hotel's hostess Amanda tells the regulars that the Germans have seized the neighboring hotel and are now only a kilometer down the beach, it does not stop them from packing their suitcases and coming as they usually do. As Edward Weyse puts it: 'If only we pretend they are not there, then they are not there'. But it is not that easy. The Germans at the neighboring hotel are in no way overlooked, because secret things are going on over there, which requires blocking and restricting guests' access to the beach.
